Schyler puts a ring on it, but gets a little more than he bargained for! Join us September 19 at Memorial Hall for The Nines – EP Release Concert!

Cincinnati’s premier vocal jazz ensemble celebrates the release of its new EP, “The Nines.” Meticulously crafted arrangements of standards from the past 100 years include homages to George Gershwin, John Coltrane, George Shearing, and Panic at the Disco. Featuring guest artists Kyle Karnes and Schyler Vargas.

NO PROMISES is a Cincinnati-based professional a cappella ensemble bringing exhilarating vocals and breathtaking harmonizations to popular favorites of jazz, Motown, and Yacht Rock. Its members have performed across North America with theatrical tours, graced the stages of Broadway, fronted major symphony orchestras, and backed the likes of Jim Messina, Steve Winwood, Kenny Loggins and POCO. In their day-to-day lives, the men of NO PROMISES are clinical psychologists, theatrical talent buyers, real estate developers and working musicians with a passion for fine a cappella singing.

A Fond Farewell to Charlie Harper

With our September 19 EP Release Concert at Memorial Hall, we bid a fond farewell to founding NO PROMISES vocalist Charlie Harper. A member of the group since its inauspicious beginnings in 2015, Charlie has boasted NO PROMISES’ biggest vocal range, on display at each concert as he moved fluidly from the bass line to stratospheric tenor as called upon. His musical training and lifetime of performing experience have help shape the course of the group, as have his passion for excellence and his surprising knowledge in a wealth of often obscure topics.

Having recently landed a terrific new professional position, Charlie will continue to follow his many and varied musical pursuits, while caring for his three wonderful kids. We hope you’ll join us in giving him a fantastic sendoff at our September 19 show at Memorial Hall.

Welcome Kyle Karnes!

We are thrilled to welcome tenor Kyle Karnes as a guest artist with NO PROMISES. Kyle will join us on our three April concerts… please see the right side of our homepage for details.

When Kyle was seven, he chose to do his first musical instead of playing baseball. During the curtain call, his parents knew they’d never get him off the stage, and he hasn’t stopped performing since. He went on to receive a BA in Music from Miami University where he trained with Audrey Luna in vocal performance. While at Miami, he was a member of the Miami University Men’s Glee Club, and was a founding member and assistant music director of the male a capella group Open Fifth. During his time with the group, Open Fifth toured the Midwest, recorded two professional albums and an EP, and was nominated for three Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards (CARA) awards. Kyle currently lives in Cincinnati with his wife, Sarah Zaffiro, and works as a web designer and developer. He is excited to make a return to vocal music as a Guest Artist with No Promises!

Spring Sing & Ring – No Promises Vocal Band & Cincinnati Collaborative Ringing Project

Shattered musical norms and sonorous surprises await as No Promises Vocal Band and the Cincinnati Collaborative Ringing Project meet for a first-ever co-bill at Finneytown’s acoustically superb Northminster Presbyterian Church. Fresh off of a noteworthy collaboration with Cincinnati’s renowned Vocal Arts Ensemble, CCRP shows off its more adventurous repertoire alongside No Promises, who render jazzy arrangements of selections spanning Manhattan Transfer and George Gershwin to Blondie and Panic at the Disco.

Admission is free, and a freewill donation will be collected. Proceeds benefit both ensembles, as well as Northminster Presbyterian Church.

The Summit – The NKY Brotherhood Singers & No Promises Vocal Band

Old-school a cappella traditions harmonize as two of Greater Cincinnati’s premier a cappella groups share a stage for the first time! Inspired by legendary groups like The Dixie Hummingbirds and The Fairfield Four, The Brotherhood offer their celebrated gospel sound enjoyed by thousands around the globe, and locally at Cincinnati Reds and Bengals home games. No Promises renders jazzy, imaginative arrangements of selections spanning Manhattan Transfer and George Gershwin to Blondie and Panic at the Disco.

The Search Is On!

NO PROMISES is looking for new singers!  So, what in the world is NO PROMISES?!?

NO PROMISES is a professional a cappella ensemble bringing exhilarating vocals and breathtaking harmonizations to popular favorites of jazz, Motown and adult contemporary music. The group is has entertained at festivals, concert series, conventions and concert halls throughout the state, and recently released its second studio album, All Wet. NO PROMISES annual holiday tours draw thousands of music lovers to enjoy selections from the group’s seasonal record, A No Promises Christmas. Its members have performed across North America with theatrical tours, graced the stages of Broadway, fronted major symphony orchestras, and backed the likes of Jim Messina, Steve Winwood, Kenny Loggins and POCO. In their day-to-day lives, the men of NO PROMISES are clinical psychologists, theatrical talent buyers, real estate developers and professional actors with a passion for fine a cappella singing.

The current roster consists of Joshua Steele, Charlie Harper, David Baum, Jeff Grooms, Matt Croy and Nat Comisar.  Read more about us here.

Who are we looking for?

One or two male singers who have:

• A tenor voice
• Excellent pop and rock solo chops
• A good ear for part singing
• Strong falsetto a plus
• Strong musical skills (reading, intervals, chord qualities, etc.) a plus
• A passion for a cappella music
• Availability for weeknight rehearsals and occasional weekend performances

When do we rehearse?

We typically rehearse Tuesday nights at 6:30 pm in the Dayton area. For the right singer, we are willing to consider changing this to a different weeknight. Rehearsals occasionally happen in Cincinnati.

We keep a digital library of our scores, rehearsal recordings and midi files to aid in learning parts.

When do we perform?

We perform around 15 times per year in the tri-state area and beyond. We book and promote our own concerts, and take pick-up gigs at events and concert series. All of us have full-time jobs, and most are parents, so we try to prioritize quality over quantity.

Will this generate income for me?

Not much, but it won’t cost you anything either. NO PROMISES covers gas expense to rehearsals and gigs. We also divide income from performances, reserving some for recording projects, equipment, marketing, etc.

I’m interested, what should I do?

1. Email Josh, tell him a bit about yourself, and send a link to a video or audio recording of you singing.
2. If we think it could be a good fit, we’ll invite you to join us at a rehearsal to sing together.

We like to have fun at rehearsals and try to make the experience more an opportunity to sing together than a proper audition. We’ll explain the situation (who will be there, etc.) in advance. We’ll need you for around 30 minutes.
